OMG UNPOPULAR OPINIONS I LOVE THOSE!!!
My unpopular opinion is that I think when it comes to actors playing specific characters I think as long as their acting is in character then the overall look of the actor shouldn't matter (if that makes sense) like my biggest example is Robin lord Taylor playing penguin. Sure, as someone who's fat and a bit of a stickler to canon it would have been nicer to see an actor more comic accurate but Robin's performance was so amazing I don't even care that he's skinny or whatever. Plus I'd rather not see him or other actors gain a bunch of weight for a role, there's been so many times it leads to health complications and yeah I'd rather not see that.
Fat suit was a lil weird though I will say that, should have just kept him skinny. LMAO
strongly agree | agree | neutral | disagree | strongly disagree
(obviously excepting things like race etc. lmao) i agree BUT BUT BUT only just agree because i'm so with you on the fat thing!! we could stand to be making characters MORE fat not LESS fat BUT i feel like the majority sometimes in fandom because people get one specific idea of what a character should look like and then freak out if they're a little different (even with fan art and people's own designs) like i want to see something really different, otherwise we might as well be telling the same story over and over again with not a single bit of difference?
robin lord taylor though is a fuckin phenomenal actor and they could have had him playing fuckin jim gordon or scarecrow or fuckin solomon grundy and i'd have been like "yep this is it this is the GUY this is MY GUY"
but that fat suit was fuckin criminal, it was the one point where the costuming people fucked up royally lmao

Who's your favorite Batman villain?
The Penguin. Was gonna put off this ask for a bit but I got surprised today with an incredible rendition of him, so now the dastardly bumbershoot waddled and squawked his way into my thoughts again and I gotta talk about him.
Penguin's not just my favorite Batman villain, he's my favorite DC character and comic book supervillain, the main reason I even want to write a Batman story someday.
I love the imagery that surrounds him, the trick umbrellas and the birds he so lovely dotes after and the WAKs and the Iceberg Lounge, which has become maligned in recent years as a sign of his downfall, but I very much appreciate as a concept in general still. I love a lot of the performances and actors who've taken him over the years. Burgess Meredith and Danny DeVito are some of my favorite performers of all time, Paul Williams has a wonderful voice and starred in my favorite film of all time. Tom Kenny, David Ogden Stiers, Robin Lord Taylor, Penguin's just had such great, terrific performances and adaptations. Batman Returns is my favorite Batman film by far and it was what got me to start paying more attention to Oswald.
I love the roles he can play in any given Batman story and how he's managed to endure all of his falls from grace by becoming an indispensable part of Batman's worldbuilding. I love his varied dynamics with Batman and Riddler and Catwoman and Gordon and his henchmen and those who get close to him. I love his style and the way he conducts himself when he's allowed to be more than just a generic mob boss. Penguin's design has, by simply staying unchanged over the decades, gone from "common rich person wear draped over a funny cartoon gangster" to "he is so out of touch and desperate for respectability that he dresses like an 1930s capitalist caricature, like a little kid's idea of what a rich and respectable man looks like, and Penguin's still stuck in that mindset". I love how absurd and plausible he is.
I like that Penguin can very easily fit just about any kind of Batman story, from the campy supervillain plots to the gritty urban crime ones. You can tell stories about Penguin falling in love, pretending to be legit because he doesn't want his aunt to learn he's a criminal, and opening up a comedy act with a talking penguin, or stories about Penguin terrorizing the city with giant robots and guided missiles and driving people to suicide. I like that he's a character who both relishes in his lifestyles of supervillain and crimelord alike, and yet is perpetually restless because the minute he acquires what he wants, he immediately starts wanting something else. He could have Batman and the Batfamily and all other supervillains wiped out and have Gotham in his pocket and maybe even become President of the United States, and he'd still want more. Because Oswald is nothing but wants, the wants of a traumatized manchild in a funny costume throwing money and toys and brute force and tantrums at the world until it makes sense, which only makes him far too fitting as a Batman villain.
Everyone forgets that Penguin was canonically the first villain to ever successfully escape Batman at the end of a story, completely bypassing the usual "villain swears revenge behind bars" ending to instead escape scot-free, and went on to establish himself as one of his biggest, most inventive and most cunning villains, second only, if not equal, to Joker. I love that he's ruthless and inventive and classy and cunning and brutal and how his main trick is using the fact that everyone underestimates the short fat man to his advantage. He's taken traits that got many of us in real life relentlessly tormented for them, and he uses them to pull the wool over those who think they are better than him.
It'ss a trick that works because even in real life people can't stop looking at this weird and silly little man and think "that guy's too silly for a Batman villain, he's not a murder clown or musclebound monster, what's he gonna do" and, yeah, that's the point, that's been the point from day one, he doesn't look scary or intimidating or even that evil, and he's the guy who pulls the rug under supergenius fighting machine Batman and becomes the top crimelord of Gotham City, a city ruled by terrors and manias and monsters infinitely bigger and scarier and stronger than he is, and he STILL made it to the top and he STILL maintains it, time and time again even when newer and flashier and scarier villains come and go. Batman is, at it's core, a fundamentally absurd character, and Penguin acts as a reminder of that. Because the minute we accept a man can terraform himself with training and money into a living legend on the level of gods, there's no reason why a tiny fat man with similar drive and resources can't likewise throw his weight with monsters and warriors far above his station.
Despite how ridiculously often he's disrespected by writers and fans alike, how far he's fallen off his former position in Batman's Rogues Gallery, and how often he's used as just a punching bag for assorted Bat-people, Penguin never goes away. He's the biggest survivor of all of Batman's villains, more so than the genuinely immortal ones, because he's the cockroach that won't go away no matter how many times you flush it.
Because once you get past the piles of money and the lounge fortresses and the armies of goons and the piles of cartoony gadget toys not too dissimilar from Batman's own, what the Penguin has is brains, and spite and hatred on a scale no other Batman villain has. He hates Batman, because Batman is nothing but yet another bully who thinks he can push Oswald around just because he's bigger and stronger. He hates the lower class for it's unsophisticated brutes and boors that made his childhood hell. He hates the upper class that's rejected and also tormented him since infancy, that he desperately spent so long trying to be a part of. He hates the monsters and supervillains he works with and has to associate with to stay alive. He hates the city that he fights to rule over tooth and nail.
And although he may never admit it, he hates himself, because he'a short paunchy man with a beakish nose who's brutal and immoral not just because those are the cards life dealt him, but because he likes what it affords him too much to give it away. Because he's never going to have the love and acceptance he desperately craves, he will never be able to accept it or keep it. Because he can never fully be a gentleman, or a monster, but instead a sad mix who belongs in neither of their worlds. Because at the end, he doesn't look like anyone else. He looks like one of him.
And still, I like Penguin because he's a Gentleman Villain. The one Gentleman Villain of Batman's rogues gallery, even if that's faded from a lot of his recent appearences that pushed the crimelord aspects to the forefront. He dresses like a gentleman thief, he's canonically a huge A.J Raffles fan, he's one of the most cunning brains of Gotham, he's got the money, resources, and adventurous spirit. Problem is, he's The Penguin. And suddenly, all that he has becomes overblown, outlandish, theatrical, and out of touch purely because it's him trying to do all those things. He's a gentleman adventurer gone rogue, the Count Fosco of the DCU, and that only makes it amusing, even endearing, when Penguin does engage in the swashbuckling antics he's so fond of.
When all his plans go to hell and so he starts fencing Batman, or when he commands henchmen with superflous fancy language, or even when Oswald gives the whole "hero" thing a shot and we see he's actually not bad at it, maybe he actually could have been one if it wasn't for the bile drowning his heart and the hellscape that warped innocent young Cobblepot into Gotham's Penguin, a name that immediately denotes something silly and ridiculous, and he carries it with pride, because he will make you respect that name.
And that's just a couple of reasons. I really, really love this character to the point of obsession and the main reason why I ever wanted to write stories for DC was to get to write Penguin and at least try to do the character a little more justice. But if nothing else, Penguin endures, regardless of what happens to him, in and out of universe. If nothing else, that's a very admirable quality in a supervillain. Oswald is the best.

Top 10 Penguins
One of Batmans most interesting foes, starting as one of his biggest rogues next to ,or even surpassing the Joker ,he kind of fell out of favor though he has kind of a reniasance lately
10.Ted Knight from New Scooby Doo Movies
Cause I needed a tenth place
9.David Ogden Stirs from Batman Mystery of the Batwoman
Replacing Paul Williams ,I think Stirs voiced fits the more refined redesign more then Williams
8.Nolan North in Arkham City
REally good thuggish Penguin,he has Bob Hoskins vibes
7.Dana Snyder from Batman Unlimited Animal Instincts and Batman Unlimited Mechs vs Mutants
Snyder also played the character on Justice League Action, which I prefer.....But had to go with Unlimited cause he got to do more as the character ,and he is a very entertaining villain in these films
6.Paul Williams in Batman the Animated Series
Love the design and the voice, and how he tries to be civilized.I also like that along with the Joker,he is the only other established villain in Gotham ,there is no orgin episode for him. I just wish he had some better episodes ,as aside from Birds of a Feather , he is kind of the villain they used when it seemed they didnt know who of the rogues to use
5.Robin Lord Taylor from Gotham
Look what I have seen of this guy I adore ,and he's not higher only because I havent seen the whole show
4.Danny Devito from Batman Returns
OI will fully admit his motivations are a mess ,and the film doesnt know whether he is a pure monster or a sympathetic character .....But Devitos masterful performance and the great makeup design are able to let me look at this character fondly and enjoy him as a scary villain .I also like the kind of Phantom of the Opera /classic monster vibe they are going for with him
3.Colin Ferrell from The Batman
A fun more gangsterish take on the chartacter ,Farell hams it up and brings a since of levity to the film .His action scene with Batman is a highlight of the film for me
2.Tom Kenny from The Batman
A bit more of a successful take on the Williams and Devito takes. A monstrous ill mannered criminal who thinks he is more high class then he actually is . Love that Kenny has reprised the role several times
1.Burgess Meredith from Batman and Batman the Movie
The BEST Penguin ,right off the comic page ,a refined criminal mastermind with an affinity for trick umbrellas .He is the main villain of Batman in this show ,appearing the most often and being the leader of the criminals in the 1966 movie .Burgess Meredith is just so much fun as this master criminal
@ariel-seagull-wings @metropolitan-mutant-of-ark @personofsinterest @amalthea9 @princesssarisa @professorlehnsherr-almashy @marquisedemasque @filmcityworld1 @lord-antihero @the-blue-fairie

alright 04 propaganda now that i have time to actually do it
cool redesign that retains elements that make him recognizably the penguin while still being unique and interesting
th pointy teeth,
based visually on a rockhopper penguin which is just kind of a neat twist on the typical take i think
also draws on the iconic look of batman returns (danny devito) penguin without being weird about the fact that he has physical deformities
thats just how he looks babe! and it owns
designed by jeff matsuda who also did character designs for eternal animated classic: jackie chan adventures
one of the few penguins who isn't just decently clever but can hold himself in a fight against the batman
have you seen any other penguin do something like this? could gotham do this? no. (full video here for your pleasure)
managed to ultimately no sell being hypnotized by dracula (if you're wondering why batman 2004 has dracula in it: don't worry about it)
TWO umbrellas
voiced by the legendary tom kenny, who if you didn't know that name is also the voice the ice king (adventure time), spongebob, and a good deal of other animated penguins after this series - its safe to say his voice is a pretty definitive penguin voice and 2004 is with whom it originated
weird and scrunkly with unusual and conventionally unattractive features which makes him far more of a candidate for the essential "wtf" factor that makes up a tumblr sexyman than "the thin guy in the suit who vaguely fits penguin theming kind of". as a premiere tumblr sexyman theorist i would know
i'm sure robin lord taylor is a lovely man but i just don't like how he looks here
after years of being overshadowed by BTAS i feel like the 2004 series in general really just deserves a win. it does a lot of cool and interesting stuff and got unfairly maligned for the crime of not being BTAS.
i think he's handsome actually
look a him
that is my propaganda. 2004 sweep
FINALS
Welcome to the final round of THE penguin sexyman competition! I had fun along the way. And I believe you guys had fun going back and forth. Anyways
LET THE FINALS BEGIN!!

Battle of the Seasons
Gotham: Season 1 vs. Season 2 vs. Season 3 vs. Season 4 vs. Season 5
Let's take this season by season, shall we?
Season 1 has a different style to it than the rest, being more of a grounded, gritty police procedural with cases-of-the-week (or two weeks) while both an overarching mob drama and an overarching mystery (who killed Thomas and Martha Wayne?) play out on the side. This is a frustrating season for me because this style could have worked - if I gave a damn about a majority of the characters, and I just don't. I don't care about Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Sarah Essen, Barbara Kean, Selina Kyle, Ed Nygma, Kristen Kringle, Leslie Thompkins, Ivy Pepper, Commissioner Loeb, Mayor James, Harvey Dent, Renee Montoya, Crispus Allen, Fish Mooney, Sal Maroni, Carmine Falcone, Butch Gilzean, Victor Zsasz or many other of this city’s miserable people. They're either boring, annoying, or utterly unpleasant, which means that I often found myself watching the show out of obligation rather than truly enjoying it.
The exceptions to the rule would be the young Bruce Wayne and his hardass yet caring butler Alfred Pennyworth (and Selina whenever she's around them, as the chemistry she has with them really brings her character to life), and, of course, the show's breakout character: Oswald Cobblepot, the man who will become the Penguin. David Mazouz, Sean Pertwee and Robin Lord Taylor sell these roles so perfectly that I just couldn't look away from the screen whenever they were on it. And while I love Oswald the whole series through, I do need to mention that this is the only season where he comes off as legitimately intimidating to me: his murderous rage can be a little over-the-top but it's anchored with a patience and a calculated skill for manipulation that makes him a force to be reckoned with as he climbs the ladder of power all the way to becoming the leader of Gotham's mob (”I’M THE KING OF GOTHAM!!!")
Season 2 is split into two distinct halves, with 2A being the "Rise of the Villains" story arc and 2B being the "Wrath of the Villains" story arc. Very quickly, it becomes apparent that the show has undergone a massive improvement - not only is it more serialized than procedural-based which ends up working better for it, but many of the characters I didn't care for are gone now, and most of the ones still left I'm finally made to care for: I actually like Harvey Bullock, Barbara Kean, Selina Kyle (on her own, not just w/ Bruce and Alfred), Ed Nygma, Ivy Pepper, Leslie Thompkins, Butch Gilzean and Victor Zsasz now, and they are now complimented by even more great characters like Lucius Fox, Nathaniel Barnes, Theo and Tabitha Galavan, Jerome Valeska, Silver St. Cloud, Bridgit Pike, Victor Fries, and Professor Hugo Strange.
The only weak link remaining is, ironically enough, the lead character himself, Jim Gordon. Maybe this character would have been interesting if he was someone else, but I never buy him as the future Commissioner. Ben McKenzie's try-hard edgy performance doesn't help.
In terms of the story arcs themselves, I like them both but much prefer "Wrath" to "Rise". "Rise" deals with Theo Galavan's rise to power in Gotham, with it revealing that he is actually the chief agent of the Order of St. Dumas, a secret society that desires the death of "the son of Gotham" - namely, Bruce Wayne. Most of what I like about this arc comes from the side stories and character development; I never really got into the central plot thread. James Frain, while good, doesn't hold the same villainous presence here that he does in, say, Elementary, and given how obviously evil he and his sister are it got tiring to see them score win after win over the good guys until the last minute. Also, certain interesting characters such as Richard Sionis, Jerome Valeska, Silver St. Cloud, Bridgit Pike and Butch Gilzean are shamefully wasted. Lastly, early into the arc the show actually makes Alfred unlikable, and since he's one of my favorite characters from the first season, that really hurt to watch.
"Wrath" deals with Professor Hugo Strange and his insidious secret experiments in Indian Hill, an underground division of Wayne Enterprises beneath Arkham Asylum that holds the key to the Wayne murder mystery. This arc just seems to flow together more smoothly than its predecessor, its contents are the type of overarching mystery I'd wanted the show to explore since the beginning rather than all the diversions from false leads, mafia wars and religious cults infiltrating the city's political structure, it provides pay-offs that I'd long been waiting for, and Professor Hugo Strange as played by B.D Wong is the perfect Big Bad. My one quibble with this arc is the decision to resurrect Fish Mooney at the end - I never cared much for her, she had a good enough ending in Season 1, and the revived, superpowered version of her ultimately accomplishes jack-squat in Season 3 before dying again anyway.
Season 3 is just one story arc, centering around the conspiracy of the Court of Owls that secretly controls all levels of power in Gotham, but its first two thirds go under the title of "Mad City" while its final third goes under "Heroes Rise". There is a good reason for this, as the events of "Mad City" see things at their bleakest yet for the forces of good in Gotham, with the forces of evil seemingly unstoppable, which makes the turning of the tide in "Heroes Rise" all the more gratifying. It’s a textbook “it’s always darkest before the dawn” storyline.
I greatly enjoy this season. There are certainly some flaws here and there - Jamie Chung's Valerie Vale is done dirty, I still can't get invested in Jim Gordon no matter how hard the show is trying to make me, and the way the writers drive a wedge between Oswald and Ed is some of the worst writing the show has ever had - the break-up ultimately needed to happen, but it didn't need to happen like this! However, so much more is done right here: the Court of Owls' portrayal, Bruce's further development, Bruce's creepy doppelganger Subject 514A aka the future Owlman, the show's depiction of the Mad Hatter and how pivotal he ends up being to the plot, Captain Barnes’ descent into madness and becoming the Executioner, Selina and Ivy just being awesome both individually and together, further great comedy from the likes of Harvey Bullock and Barbara Kean, the more interesting usage of Carmine Falcone via his "legit" son Mario who in turn helps Lee become even more interesting, the return of Jerome Valeska as the Beta Joker, Ed fully transitioning into the Riddler, Oswald finally embracing himself as a "freak" and ultimately getting his revenge on Ed, and the finale which introduces Ra's Al Ghul (played to perfection by Alexander Siddig) as he engages in a Batman Begins-style plot where he unleashes a virus that threatens to make Gotham tear itself apart.
However, there is one major drawback for Season 3...in spite of all this great stuff, it ultimately amounts to just being more set-up. And as such, all of the big dramatic conclusions that are reached by the end get completely reversed early into the following season. Bruce and Alfred have a rift with Selina? Mended shortly into Season 4! Bruce has dedicated himself to being a vigilante? He'll walk that back soon enough! Oswald is back in power and owns the Iceberg Longue? Not for much longer! Ivy works for Oswald? She'll be done with his shit by the end of the Season 4 premiere! Ed is frozen? He's thawed out a mere three episodes into Season 4, and the negative effect to his brain from being frozen don't even last! Lee leaves Gotham in order to escape her dark side? Nope, she's back in the city and her dark side continues to grow. Butch and Barbara are dead? Aha, they're both back alive! The loss of big characters like Nathaniel Barnes and Fish Mooney? Never mentioned again! And of course, there's the presence of Ra's Al Ghul and the League of Shadows as the group behind the Court of Owls, which just goes to show that despite all the build-up, the Court of Owls was never truly the end-all be-all force of evil in Gotham, so this show ain't over yet.
Season 4, "A Dark Knight" is kind of Season 3's equal yet opposite. There is a lot of stuff in it that doesn't quite work for me, moreso in the execution rather than the conception - Alexander Siddig as Ra's Al Ghul credited as a regular and yet only actually showing up in the first few and last few episodes, Oswald being betrayed and losing all of his power again, Ivy Pepper's long-awaited transformation into Poison Ivy taking ten whole bloody episodes, Ed's severe case of Badass Decay and pointless romance with Lee, Butch's transformation into Solomon Grundy not lasting or amounting to anything important which makes me question why it even happened, the Sirens being formed and also not lasting or amounting to anything important, Bruce's long period of being unlikable (far moreso than even Alfred's period back in 2A), and the Beta Joker only turning out to be the Beta Joker because his twin brother whom we'd never seen or heard of before shows up to become the real Joker!
However, there is also a lot that does work for me - Harvey Bullock finally ascending from just comic relief and having some well-executed character development as he clashes with Jim, Lee's arc of becoming the leader of the Narrows, Oswald's touching relationship with a young orphan boy and his reconciliation with Ed, Ra's Al Ghul whenever he is around, Professor Pyg who is equal parts terrifying and comical and played masterfully by Michael Cerveris, Sofia Falcone who - being a sociopathic master manipulator who even manages to serve Jim a permanent and well-deserved defeat - is hands-down one of the most brilliant villains the show has ever had, and the perfectly-done sense of escalation and excitement throughout the second half of the season which concludes in the best season finale in the series' history, where the good guys contend with a team-up between Ra's Al Ghul and the Joker. And that's what Season 4 has over Season 3 - it builds to a true climax for the entire show's story, almost everything that goes down in the end is permanent (emphasis on almost - looking at you, Lee and Ed), and it retroactively makes the lack of pay-off in Season 3 and the less-than-desirable parts of this season worth it. It made me grateful for sticking with this show.
Season 5, titled "Legend of the Dark Knight", is the show's final season, and its biggest strength is also its biggest weakness - it is a truncated season, lasting only 12 episodes. On the one hand, this is perfectly appropriate - the Season 4 finale was the story's climax and there's not much left to do, so having roughly half a normal season's length for the falling action and wrapping up of all loose ends makes total logical sense. But on the other hand, there are certain ideas for plotlines and character arc resolutions that end up feeling incredibly rushed due to the shorter runtime. It feels like they are rushing down a long checklist rather than allowing anything proper breathing room. Also: yes, a lot of Season 3 and Season 4 clearly borrowed from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but they did it in clever ways. This season shamefully rips off The Dark Knight Rises by having a plot inspired by the No Man's Land storyline from the comics, a big focus on the relationship between Bruce and Selina, the main hero (Jim Gordon in this case) falling to his lowest point before rising again, the final battle being between the GCPD and Bane's army, and having the main villain be Bane except that he's actually working for the daughter of Ra's Al Ghul (Nyssa in this case) who was masquerading as someone else! Did the writers really think that they could outright cheat off of Christopher Nolan's homework and that viewers wouldn't notice!?
In the end, my ranking is Season 3 = Season 4 > Season 2 > Season 5 > Season 1.
I think that Seasons 3 and 4 are equally strong but hold just the slightest personal preference for Season 3, Season 2 is also really good and mainly just suffers from its adequate first story arc being weaker than its more interesting second story arc, Season 5 is a middling season that somehow manages to be both the ideal conclusion for the show and a less-than-ideal conclusion at the same time, and Season 1 is the weakest due to all of the growing pains the show had to go through before it could become entertaining on a consistent level and make me care about most of its characters. On the whole, Gotham is a well-executed series. It’s far from perfect, but it could have been far worse....it could have been Smallville! (Cue rimshot!)

Gotham 5x11
drink: in honor of Bane, I'm drinking Venom - a mix drink composed of stale sprite, lemonade, and sour green apple schnapps (15% alcohol)
Nyssa threatening to steal Barbara, Jr., and raise her as an al Ghul... Nyssa's like CRAZY crazy
my wife re: Pengriddler: "they are like barbie dolls to me."
where was Cory Michael Smith's emmy for "AND THE TREASURE!!!!"
"remember the nightwing project" KEEP HIS NAME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH "it's a beacon for certain animals" I WONDER WHAT KIND
as far as I'm concerned Pengriddler has been canonized in these last few episodes like the writing has never been sloppier but also the subtext has never been thicker. congrats to noted homosexuals Robin Lord Taylor and Cory Michael Smith, you guys won in the end
I am still holding steadfast to my theory that the writers hated Cory Michael Smith though it feels like once they resolved his mind control storyline they simply didn't care enough to wrap anything up for the Riddler so now he just runs around acting married to the Penguin
not Oswald taking shrapnel for him...
the thing is that this is the BIGGEST threat Gotham (the show and the city) has ever had but this doesn't really feel like a climax like there's no particular resolution to this story this feels as slap dash as every other season finale and most of the characters are going nowhere fast
where was David Mazous's emmy for his delivery of "we need to make it a bomb again"
Barbara just snapped a man's neck with one leg.... maybe the pussy IS worth it idk idk
this bomb is like. a legends of tomorrow-level prop (bad). arrow, even. do you remember when Sara's canary cry sonic bombs were glade air fresheners.
OH MY GOD THERE'S WASP IN MY HOUSE
wasp situation rectified!
ooooh this fight scene between Nyssa and Jim is so badly edited RIP RIP RIP forever
UNIRONICALLY GIVE ERIN RICHARDS AN EMMY FOR "YOU BOTH LOVE GETTING KILLED BY THIS KNIFE" BIIIIIITCH
did the bats... kill Bane...
okay he's alive but he definitely has rabies now
here's how LeeXBarbara can still win
incredibly funny that the climax of this conflict is predicated on the assumption that members of the US army would balk when asked to shoot civilians. MAYBE the presence of a blonde white woman with a newborn baby slides it into believability but just barely
how on earth is there another episode after this
oh my god they brought the Riddler duality split personality mirror motif back with a VENGEANCE at the last minute
the parallels with Ed's successful murder/suicide with Lee vs he and Oswald not being able to bring themselves to murder/suicide each other... I am looking with my gay little eyes
BRUCE WAYNE YOU'RE A BAD BOYFRIEND >:(
that's not news but I'm still disappointed. I hope Selina steals his shit first and then burns the rest of the city down tbqh
WHAT'S UP GAMERS IT'S GOTHAM TIME
Gotham 5x09
drink: simply spiked lemonade (5% alcohol)
Lee asked if she's supposed to stay at home to raise Jim's baby with Barbara while Jim's out playing cowboy cop and like... maybe. personally I would like to see it
I love the spirit halloween costumes the gangs are wearing they're so fun. also quoth my wife they're all "bouncing in an idle animation" and they really are
baby batcat date!!!
Ben McKenzie got to write an episode and the first thing he did was shoot Jim... even Jim is sick of Jim
and Erin Richards is directing they really were just outsourcing episodes to the cast at this point
Robin Lord Taylor is dialing the performance up to like a 20 out of 10 today. full male hysteria moment. and good for him!
unexpected Ivy return! ma'am please step away from that underage boy!
my wife, watching Jim Gordon prosecute himself at his own hallucinatory trial, unimpressed: "that's just what it's like to be Catholic."
cannot believe Zsasz may have finally pulled off a hit on a main character good job baby boy.
Ben McKenzie I am hugging you warmly for writing a moment where Alfred talks about how much he loves Bruce and Is his father. perhaps a tiny Alfred redemption arc with four episodes to go.
Ivy and Zsasz should just fuck, actually
Lucius baby you've been Poison Ivy'd before you cannot fall for this so easy I'm in hell
Jim hallucinating Oswald and Ed cozily playing the piano singing together... what does it all mean
Bruce and Selina fighting:
I cannot believe I'm going to say this but Ben McKenzie should have written more episodes. this one is so dumb it rules.
actually genuinely extremely fucked up the degree to which Jim and Lee seem to be planning to raise this child without Barbara entirely what's the plan gamers
HOLY TIMESKIP BATMAN
NOT THE WEDDING AT THE GCPD BEN MCKENZIE YOU MADMAN
Harvey officiating... shut the fuck up...
Selina wearing a studded leather jacket and her cat gloves to a wedding is so fucking funny. iconic. she IS Catwoman.
my wife, watching Jim and Lee get married: "she should kill him right now. take him out in the happiest moment of his life."
my wife understands this show perfectly, reader

Gotham for the fandom thing
Favorite character: Ed Nygma! *ahem* He is one of my favorite characters since the first lego Batman game as well along with other rogues(expect Jervis), Riddler is one of my most favorite Batman rogues. Forget my simp level on Ed, Robin Lord Taylor's portray as The Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot is the best.
Least Favorite character: Jervis Tetch, i find him a creep. Gotham fans ships him with Jonathan Crane which is very abusive in my opinion. I mean how Gotham fans likes him as a character that he abuses Alice. If i we're a writer about Batman i would give this weirdo(Jervis) a better backstory. Still i hate this Jervis Tetch's portrayal. He is not VALID
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Twiddlebird/Nygmobbledent, Batcat, Banecrow/DorranCrane, Victor Fries x Nora Fries & Ecco x Ivy.
Character I find most attractive: Harvey Dent & Oswald Cobblepot oblivious.
Character I would marry: NONE! Just kidding i will not marry one of these guys.
Character I would be best friends with: I will befriended Bruce, Selina, Jon, Ivy and Bridget.
a random thought: Funny story... I used to hate Nygmobblepot/Riddlebird as a child until i watch this series on Netflix and when i see Penguin & Riddler first meeting and the sequence of their dynamics, that's how i ship them.
An unpopular opinion: My unpopular opinion we're Twiddler & Banecrow should be canon. Thomas Elliot should be come back and soon he will become the REAL HUSH! Jervis is the worst guardian. The Jokers on Gotham are just okay.
my canon OTP: I don't know, Bruce Wayne x Selina Kyle?
Non-canon OTP: Um... I have too many liked ships but i will go with my childhood LGBT ship Harvey Dent x Edward Nygma.
most badass character: Selina Kyle & Alfred Pennyworth, duh.
pairing I am not a fan of: Batjokes can traumatized me of how Jerome nearly kills Bruce and Jeremiah manipulates Jim & Lee to discover Bruce's past. Mainly it's Hattercrow, i mean why it existed? It will be worse ship and it can hurt the series. Jonathan & Jervis' dynamics is the thing that i hate this ship. I would put Jervis to jail.
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I think The Riddler's and Eduardo Dorrance's early lifes are a big mess up. I mean they should describe better; Bane gets abandoned by his parents and later he leads the military. Edward's parents are abusive towards him. That's not how Ed's early life works. And other that writers screwed up is Mr.Freeze. Victor Fries supposed to be a tragic villain but NOPE! He forgets his wife Nora Fries.
favourite friendship: I love Oz & Victor Zsasz's dynamics. I only wish they're best murder friends.
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: If i we're Alice's daughter, i would kill Mad Hatter in a cold blood.

Ever met a celebrity or anybody famous? The most famous person I've met was a former pro boxer, by the name of Ray 'Boom-Boom' Mancini at a charity dinner at the banquet center I worked at 4 years ago. Nicest man you'd ever meet and he even sent me a signed autograph picture in the mail. I'm a Star Trek fan and I'd love to meet the cast of TNG, but autographs and conventions are so expensive. Of course there's the chance you could catch one of them on a bad day and get the brunt of it
If we’re including conventions, then yeah I’ve met several famous people before. I’ve met and gotten autographs and/or selfies from voice actors and screen actors, and I’ve occasionally met some artists too! Outside of that, though, I can’t really say I have. Even my best and most extensive meeting was still at a convention. You could even argue that Mario Marathon was kind of a convention in a sense, albeit a super limited one!
I wasn’t sure if I should include a list or not, so as a compromise I’m going to do so below a cut!
Voice Actors:
Sonny Strait (voice of Krillin) -- Got to spend basically an entire day with him! Unexpectedly encountered him at a convention waaaay way back in the day and he just kind of adopted me and the other handful of fans that were hanging around. He gave us all free DBZ CCG t-shirts, let us sit in the DBZ hummer, and signed anything we put in front of him!
Christopher Sabat (voice of Vegeta) -- I brought him a set of cookies made to look like dragon balls, and brought my favorite Vegeta card that I’d been saving for something like 17 years or so on the off-chance I could ever get it signed. He was so moved and impressed that he gave me two other autographs for free~
Todd Haberkorn (voice of Jaco) -- This was the same convention where I got to meet Chris Sabat, and I also brought him a box of cookies. He was so excited that he dug into them right then and there, and then when signing my card he even wrote “Thanks for the galactic cookies!”
Chuck Huber (voice of Android 17/Hiei) -- I’ve gotten autographs from him a couple of times for different characters. One of the items I got signed was one of the original Hiei action figures back when Yu Yu Hakusho first debuted in the US. He was impressed that I had it at all, let alone that it was in the box. (Amusingly, the only reason I did was because I had one previous to it that was out of the box on display and whose sword had broken. I got a new one intending to replace it, but just never opened it.)
Chris Rager (voice of Mr. Satan) -- SUCH a nice guy! We had a nice little chat and I offered him some dragon ball cookies I’d been handing out that day. He signed my trading card and took a selfie with me! I caught him at a panel where he told some absolutely amazing behind-the-scenes stories that I still tell to other people to this day.
Chris Cason (voice of Tien) -- Not much to say about this encounter, I didn’t get to say much more than a hello and thank you before he had to go. I’d missed the official signing session and just happened to catch him after a panel.
Team Four Star -- I catch these guys every opportunity I can manage, and every time I bring them some DBZ-themed treat. I refer to myself as “Snack Girl” when I come to get autographs, and at my last encounter Lanipator mentioned that I looked familiar when I came to the table, so I guess I’m making an impact! I have several stories concerning these guys, way too many to list here.
Little Kuriboh (YGOA voice of Merik, DBZA voice of Freeza) -- Amusingly I met him the time I was at a convention in my Piccolo costume, and that ended up being a whole conversation by itself. It then immediately turned into a conversation about Fallout because someone had brought him some New Vegas playing cards, lol. He was enamored with the trading card I had brought him to sign, and we had a discussion about a fund raiser he’d hosted to raise money for disaster relief where I’d won one of the auctions he’d held.
Kevin Conroy (voice of Batman) -- I found out very late that he was going to be in town, like maybe a week or two before, and dropped EVERYTHING to be able to meet him. When I was in line for an autograph I was so worked up that I kept getting light headed and having heart palpitations. By the time I actually made it to the table I was so starstruck that I could barely say anything. I’m pretty sure I said “I can’t believe you’re here” (??? wtf past-me) and something about him being so talented. He thanked me and didn’t really say much. I had also paid for a photo with him, and in the photo you can see my hand gripping the side of my leg REALLY tightly because I had a very strong instinct to hug him and I WAS NOT ABOUT TO BE THAT FANGIRL.
Charles Martinet (voice of most of the Mario cast) -- Holy shit, this man is playful! He was an absolute delight to talk to, and even just to watch with other people while I was in line. He was very open to whatever sorts of fan requests each person had and was just so warm and gracious with each person that came up. I mostly just wanted to shake his hand and tell him that Mario games basically set me up for the person I grew up to be today. The thing that amused me the most is that if you had him autograph one of the prints at the table, which had all the Mario characters on it, he’d do the voices of each character while doodling little word balloons for them~
Screen Actors:
John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who/Torchwood) -- This was one of the first times I’d gone to a convention specifically to meet an actor. He was a lot of fun and did his best to be chatty, but his handlers were kind of hurrying people along. He was especially tickled by my name (I guess he doesn’t sign too many autographs made out to “Leda”), and he even signed a second item that we happened to have for free!
Cary Elwes (Wesley in The Princess Bride, among other things) -- This was another one of those moments where the weight of just WHO I was meeting got to me and I completely lost my voice. I think I said something about having grown up watching Princess Bride ever since I was a little kid?? I honestly don’t remember what I said, it’s kind of a blur. All I know is that I was so struck by the moment that I didn’t even remember to say that I also love him in the Saw movies.
Billy Boyd (Pippin in Lord of the Rings) -- Not a lot I can say about this one because it was a very fast-paced, conveyor belt sort of affair. We exchanged greetings and he thanked us very much for coming out to see him, and we all agreed that Pippin is totes the best hobbit.
Robin Lord Taylor (Penguin in Gotham) -- One of my favorite interactions meeting a celebrity, for sure! He was actually really interested in knowing about -me-, which completely threw me off-guard. He wanted to know where I was from and what I did for a living, and when I said I was a manager at Spencer’s he got really excited and squeaked “I LOVE Spencer’s!” While he was signing my doll I explained that Penguin is by far my family’s favorite character in Gotham and that we had a joke where, anytime the show switches back to him, we say “Meanwhile, with the REAL main character...” He got a big kick out of that~
Khary Payton (King Ezekiel in The Walking Dead) -- So I don’t watch a huge amount of Walking Dead, but I watch enough that I wanted to come along when my mom went to go get an autograph from him for my brother. He’s definitely the friendliest celebrity I’ve encountered -- so much so that he wouldn’t stay behind the table! He spent the entire time in FRONT of the table so he could hug every single person that came to see him! It was a nice strong hug, too, and he was just so welcoming and pleasant. I told him that, if I had to choose one of the communities in The Walking Dead, I’d absolutely choose The Kingdom. He threw his hands up to his sides and said dramatically, “You will always have a place in my kingdom!”
Penn & Teller -- This year my mom took me on a surprise trip to Las Vegas, and while we were there we got to see Penn & Teller perform, which has always been a dream of mine! After the show they came out into the lobby and they did autographs and selfies with anyone that wanted one, and I got to meet them each. It was a little disarming hearing Teller talk, and Penn was as funny as ever because he’d loudly comment whenever someone’s phone wasn’t working. During this trip I also had my Boris plushie as my “traveling doll” and asked if they’d take pictures with him as well, which they both obliged. Teller seemed particularly amused by Boris.
James Rolfe (the Angry Video Game Nerd) -- So I actually have kind of a long history with him, which originated with me contacting the show to donate a fairly odd peripheral accessory. I given a green light and provided an address, and since I was going to be mailing him anyway, I basically just got a big box and threw in any video game related stuff that I didn’t want anymore and didn’t feel like putting the effort into selling. It ended up being a HUGE box, so much so that I included an inventory list to make sure he didn’t accidentally throw something away. To my surprise he actually mailed me back an autographed AVGN print thanking me for the donations! I thought that’d be the end of it, but he’s actually since featured that peripheral several times on the show, and even included an Easter egg that I asked for twice! This year I got to meet him at Too Many Games and introduced myself as the one that sent the item in. He mentioned that they had a lot of fun messing with it.
Mario Marathon team -- I’m known as one of the regulars since I’ve been around since the first year, and a couple of years ago I was actually invited to the marathon itself as a player! It’s definitely one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and I only wish I could do it all over again! Everyone was just... wonderful~ I was there for several days so there’s obviously way too many stories to tell, but at least in this case you can always go watch the videos on Twitch.
Artists:
Steven Butler -- This was particularly amusing because I was the one that caught him by surprise. I happened to be making my way through the Artist Alley when I realized he was there, and since no one was at the table at the time I went over to talk to him. We had an awesomely long chat about his work (I was going through a sample book on the table) and his time drawing for the Sonic comics. He tried to bring it up as a talking point, and I told him “I know, I own some of your pages!” which REALLY threw him for a loop! He showed me some art for a new Sonic-style story he’s been working on, and I completely fell in love with a character that was clearly inspired by Sally (and I’m not just assuming, he confirmed as much). I then started talking about @fini-mun and how it’s only a shame he couldn’t meet Deebs too, and was talking about Deebs’ history with art and almost getting recruited to be in the Archie art stable as well and how they now do art streams. He was particularly interested in the streams, and I was like “Oh yeah, that’s actually why they aren’t here now, they have a stream today!” so he gave me a free print to pass along to Deebs as a show of interest and support!
Veronica Vera (from the Not Enough Rings comic) -- This was another chance encounter in Artist Alley. I was just kind of poking around to see everyone’s work, and I realized I recognized the comic she was selling. I commented that I loved that comic, and she said she was selling hardcover copies of the entire series. I love the comic and I wanted to show my support, so I bought a book and she signed the inside cover! Unfortunately Oliver Bareham wasn’t there at the time, so no autograph from him. Maybe one day if I’m incredibly lucky, I suppose.
Rich Koslowski -- This was at one of my very first conventions ever. He was an inker of the Sonic comics at the time, and I was only.... 12, I think? I mostly was just excited to be meeting someone that works on Sonic stuff, and I can’t remember much about the encounter aside from just babbling about liking Sonic. I remember him being very kind.
And unfortunately... Ken Penders -- This was at the same convention I just mentioned with Koslowski. As stated above I was only 12, and I was just excited to meet someone who works on Sonic stuff. I believe I was there because of a post on Archie’s Sonic website. Anyway what strikes me as the most surprising about this encounter is how -normal- it all was, at least as far as I remember it. I’ve heard some horror stories of Penders being horrible to fans at conventions, but at least way back at this time (like 1997 or so), he was passing for a normal human. He didn’t say anything mean to me (that I noticed), and he actually gave me some free Sonic loot, which I can’t imagine him ever doing nowadays. I still have the comic book he signed, and I legit consider burning it on a regular basis.
OKAY this ended up way longer that I thought it would. I think even -I- forgot how many people I’ve met before. If I think of anyone else I’ll add it to the list later!

Time is running out for Jim Gordon and Gotham, and nobody is more acutely aware of that fact than Ben McKenzie, the actor who has portrayed the flinty Gordon for five seasons on the Fox series that shares its name with Batman’s hometown. “It’s a lot to take in,” McKenzie said about the Gotham series finale that airs tonight. “It really is one of those bittersweet moments. But the show was never an open-ended proposition.”
Tonight’s finale is titled “The Beginning…” but the name isn’t quite as ironic as it sounds. That’s because the drama was built to be a sort of “prequel procedural” that leads up to the familiar Batman mythology that DC Comics has been publishing since 1939. The narrative window would begin in Bruce Wayne’s youth with the murder of his parents, and effectively end with his first forays as a costumed crimefighter: Gotham would end when Batman begins. That graduation moment arrives tonight with the show’s 100th episode, the first to feature an appearance by the Caped Crusader in action.
Gotham fans are more than ready to see the Dark Knight in all his cowled glory, but the show’s creative team hasn’t shared that eagerness. Just the opposite. Executive producer Bruno Heller, the British producer best known for The Mentalist and Rome, has said he would never have developed the show if it was a traditional costumed-hero franchise. “I don’t think Batman works very well on TV,” Heller said back in 2014. “To have people behind masks? Frankly, all those superhero stories I’ve seen, I always love them — until they get into the costume.”
That has made Gotham an eccentric entry in the superhero sector, but not an entirely unprecedented one. Smallville (217 episodes, 2001-2010) still reigns as the longest-running television series ever based on DC Comics heroes, and creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar shared a similar aversion to costumed exploits. Their early mission statement was “no flights, no tights,” and the series held out until its final episode to put Clark Kent (Tom Welling) in Superman’s iconic suit.
For Heller and his team, the key to making a compelling Gothamwithout a Batman was to spotlight the hero’s trusted friend, James Gordon, the dedicated lawman destined to become the police commissioner of a city defined by its lawlessness and celebrity criminals. Gordon was introduced in the first panel of the first page of the first Batman comic book ever published, Detective Comics No. 27, the landmark issue that reached its 80th anniversary last month. Gotham added a key element to its version of Gordon — when Thomas and Martha Wayne are murdered, Gordon is the detective who handles the investigation.
Gordon is the good cop who holds on to his morals in a bad city that loses its marbles. The show found the man for the job in McKenzie, who had memorably portrayed LAPD officer Ben Sherman on the highly regarded (but lowly rated) Southland, which aired 2009 to 2013 on NBC and TNT. Before that, the Texan portrayed Ryan Atwood, a scruffy outsider adopted by a wealthy Newport Beach couple and the central character on The OC, the frothy Fox teen drama that aired for 92 episodes from 2003 to 2007.
“I had some things in common with the character,” McKenzie says with a shrug. It’s true, the 23-year-old actor trekked west from dusty Austin (instead of rural Chino) to Southern California, and bought himself a eye-catching Cadlliac DeVille that already had logged 17 hard years and 228,000 long miles. “That’s lot of miles.”
McKenzie has covered a lot of distance in his personal life while channeling the role of Gordon. In 2017, for instance, McKenzie married his Gotham co-star, Morena Baccarin, who has portrayed Dr. Leslie Thompkins on the series (and is well-known for her role in the Deadpool films as the mutant anti-hero’s love interest). The couple now have their first child.
For McKenzie, the end of Gotham closes a pivotal chapter in his screen life. But he’s also hoping that the final seasons will also someday represent a prelude to a different career story — one writing and directing. The actor directed the sixth episode of Season 5, and also directed one in each of the previous two seasons. McKenzie has also written the screenplay for two Gotham episodes: “One of My Three Soups” in Season 4 and “The Trial of Jim Gordon” in this final season.
McKenzie, the writer, didn’t exactly go easy on his fictional screen persona. The cop took a slug in the chest and hovered near death for much of the episode, stuck somewhere between “the here” and “the hereafter” in an existential courtroom where he had to defend his life.
‘I actually feel no sympathy for him at all,” McKenzie said with a chuckle. “The less sympathy you feel, the better, I’d say. The more pain you inflict upon the protagonist, hopefully, the higher the stakes are and the more emotion gets elicited. So I had to be a bit of masochist. Putting him through the ringer and having this existential crisis, this dream, where he’s on trial for his crimes and faces the loss of everything: the love of his life and his child at the same time. I think we got there. That’s about as high stakes as you can get. I think, ultimately satisfying, with the kind of emotional payoff we were looking for.”
That seems to apply to the season as a whole. The final episode is an epic send-off, too, with a story that flashes forward a decade (long enough for Gordon to sport a new mustache) and finds the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) returning from prison and Bruce Wayne returning to his ancestral home after years in self-imposed exile. It also coincides with the rise of the show’s off-kilter version of the Joker (Cameron Monaghan). “It’s fitting that he comes into conflict with Gordon and Wayne right at the end,” McKenzie said. “Cameron has been amazing and there was room for one more big flourish with the role.”
Most of the reviews have veered from good to great, encouraging news for the cast and crew of a series that had been uneven or over-the-top at times. “Everybody’s been very enthusiastic and positive,” McKenzie said. “The final season has been wrapping things up in the way the audience hoped we would.”
Gotham City is arguably the most famous city created in American popular culture since the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz (although Metropolis, Springfield, Mayberry, Twin Peaks, and Riverdale are other prominent spots on the map of un-real estate). Even without Batman, the city zoned by greed, paved in corruption, and mapped by trauma seems to have no limits as far as its story range.
“It’s extraordinary when you think about it,” McKenzie said. “The city itself is a character. There’s a lot of stories to be found in Gotham City. There’s a lot of stories being told from Gotham, too.”
It’s true, Gotham City will be the site of Batwoman, the pilot on The CW this fall, and for a string of upcoming feature films including Joker, The Batman, and the Birds of Prey project.
Also this year: a Harley Quinn animated series and Pennyworth (a series about Batman’s loyal butler) on Epix. Pennyworth and Gothamare unconnected in their story continuity, but both are from the tandem of executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist) and executive producer/director Danny Cannon (CSI franchises).
A passing reference in the 2016 film Suicide Squad identified Gotham City as a major metropolitan hub in the Garden State. The city’s location had been a vague matter for decades, but now it is officially part of New Jersey’s map, and Springsteen isn’t the only local hero named Bruce.
On Gotham, the city feels more like Al Capone’s Chicago than Dracula’s Transylvania. “There’s a specific look and style that Gotham has that sets the show apart. It’s visual identity is distinctive and it was really interesting to work within that as a director.”
Has McKenzie inherited anything Gordon, anything he will take with him forward? “Maybe. We have some things in common, too. He’s living in the same city I live in, New York, but just the slightly more dramatic version. He’s had to figure things out on the fly and his life has changed and met the love of his life and had a child. There’s a lot of similarities there. But I haven’t bought a gun and I don’t go around shooting one. And I’m more a jeans and t-shirts guy. Although Gordon’s given me an appreciation for a good suit, that’s for sure.”
McKenzie said he’s learned a lot from the creative team he’s worked with, and he believes his acting has made his directing better and vice versa, as well. There’s several new projects that looks promising for McKenzie, both as an on-screen presence and writer or director. Still, saying goodbye to Gotham has been a sentimental exercise for the man who plays the taciturn detective.
“It’s hard. I’ve been through it a couple of times before. I’ve been on two shows before, so it’s been less daunting then before. I’ve built really strong bonds with these folks. We spent more time together than we do with our families for nine months a year. It’s been a joy and a experience I will never forget. I can’t forget. I wake up every morning to my wife and child who happened during it. So yes, it’s been a city without limits for me.”

The End Of Gotham Comes In They Did What
‘They Did What’ comes in and wraps the plot of ‘Gotham’ up in a neat little bow, leaving only Bruce Wayne’s journey from boy to Bat to be completed. In the usual ‘Gotham’ way, it’s all a bit rushed and there are still a lot of questions, but that is all we will get, as next week we jump forward in time to see the arrival of Batman and the return of the Joker. What we are mostly concerned with here is where everyone was left.
Let’s start with the show’s most valuable players. Penguin and Riddler, Oswald and Ed...whatever you want to call them they got the short end of the stick yet again. While it’s nice that they recommit to helping each other or at least not killing each other for the foreseeable future, it would have also been nice to see one or both of them finally come out on top. Without these characters in the show and Robin Lord Taylor and Corey Michael Smith playing them, who knows if the show would have lasted past its first season. They’ve added so much to a series that can sometimes get mired in its own convoluted plots and ‘They Did What?’ was no different. I’m still not exactly sure why the subplot of Nyssa al Ghul and Bane was necessary - We already had a destroyed Gotham City, and watching the struggle to control it was plenty entertaining so the two characters really only took away screen time from the main players. I would have rather seen one more Penguin plan but alas, at least we had as much time as we did.
Our other MVP for Gotham also ends up with a somewhat questionable plot conclusion. Barbara Keen has been a lot of things in the show, but completely forgiven might not be the place for her to end up. Much like Ed and Oswald, I would have liked to see her end up winning, but instead, we mostly see her accepting her fate. I know, I know, it is ‘Gotham’ and the bad guys aren’t supposed to win but it’s difficult with a show that made you root so hard for these three. It’s not as if Barbara got a terrible ending, it just would have been nice to see her get more than the acceptance of Gordon and Thompkins. Her shift away from a crime boss (and in fact Thompkins switch from Narrows boss back to Doctor) to a doting mother(?) doesn’t feel quite right in the end. Hopefully, all of these characters will get placed a little better after the time-shift next week.
The two characters who will likely see the most ‘conclusion’ after the time jump will be Bruce and Selina, but as far as where they are left now I feel a bit cheated. More so with Selina, who had little to do in this episode. Unfortunately, Camren Bicondova has decided not to play the adult Selina, which adds to the feeling that this character ultimately was underserved by the show. Bruce feels like an afterthought for most of this penultimate episode. It was as if the writers saw the finished product and realized they needed to add something for him to be doing. I hope we get to see more of his journey to becoming the Batman, but I suspect that will be glossed over to get to the action of the finale.

My Reaction to “Gotham” S5E5
*still reeling* ....OK.... hold on....
AN: I managed to record my reactions to this episode and hopefully I can transcribe what I said into this post.
*Recap shows Ed blowing up Haven in the flashback* So why did Ed blow up Haven?
Crap, and Jim’s gonna find out. WhooooOOOOO....
Whoa....
*has to tilt head to side to figure out what film is playing*
AN: It’s a 1953 noir film called “Tangier Incident”
“You gonna arrest me?” “Who said anything about arresting you?” *raises eyebrows in surprise*
“Whaddya say, boys?” Uhhhh...
OK, what is it with churches this season?
Take him down, Jim.
“Now, who told you I sold that RPG?” A friend.
*gasps when a military squad rappels through the stain glass on the ceiling*
Whoa whoa wait what?
Oh I like that camera shot [when Jim took down the arms dealer]
*gasps when the arms dealer gets shot in the head*
Ohhhh is this-
*Eduardo walks up and pulls down his mask* Yooo!
“Last time I saw you, you were running through sniper fire plucking my sorry ass from a burning truck.” *chuckles*
I am very interested to see how Shane West is gonna pull off Bane.
*silently jams out to opening theme*
Oh, I like this slow version.
“We hated each other in boot. Jim disapproved of my ops tempo.” “Yeah, ‘cause you only had one speed: too fast.” *chuckles*
Ahhh Harvey’s being the third wheel!
“We’re here to eliminate all criminal threats.” *starts chuckling* Eduardo’s rolling his eyes. He’s like ‘I can’t believe I’m here either.’
*lets out small gasp when Jim finds Ed’s name in the arms dealer’s ledger*
“What you [Harvey] are is the best cop that I know. I’m goin’ after Nygma; he’s ten steps ahead. If anything goes sideways, you’ll have to take over. I need your help, buddy.” VINDICATIOOONNNN!!
*trying to read the name of the episode writer* Who wrote this? Id- what?
“You saw what she did to Jeremiah.” Did you though?
“Jeremiah Valeska deserved to die.” *smirking because we all know he’s still alive*
“Jeremiah made Selina a murderer. Just like Ra’s made me a murderer.” “Ra’s goaded you into stabbing him, Master Bruce. He used you as an instrument; you’re no murderer.” *jaw drops*
*sits back in seat* Holy shit, that parallel!
“And I’m gonna go find her.” Oh, I’m betting Selina’s not gonna be happy to see you.
*fans self* This episode’s gonna break me.
*Ed listens to his past recordings* A swamp?
“YOU’RE NOT A MURDERER, ED.” Wow, I love Jim Carrey in “Batman Forever”
*gasps when Ed breaks the mirror by punching it*
*chuckling* How did they find him so fast?!?
“No, Jim, I can explain!” *nods*
“I can prove it! I just- I need- I need a little bit of time.” No, no, take him in now. Take him in.
“The people I have hurt... they hurt me first. I didn’t know a single person in Haven!” What the hell kind of excuse is that?
“Your call, buddy.” Don’t shoot him. Just take him in.
“We bring him in. He stands trial.” There we go.
*The floor panel under Eduardo sinks down* Oh my God, they put a bomb in the floor.
“Your friend is standing on a pressure-plated IED. One of several throughout the rooms.” Of course he found time- when did he find time to rig the room?
*laughs* That little eyebrow [raise of Eduardo’s]- like “Really?!?”
“Once word gets out that you’re responsible for Haven, they’ll have a target on your back.” “I’ll take my chances.” Really?
“A wristband that monitors his heart rate?” “Welcome to Gotham.” *laughs*
“Puzzle?” “There’s always a puzzle with Nygma.” Yes, there is.
*Jim climbs over to the bookshelf on the tables and chairs* The floor is lava!
Actually Jim and Eduardo work really well together. I like that.
*sighs in relief when Jim manages to get to the bookshelf*
*still laughing* How do you get rid of a bomb? Easy. The floor is lava!
“I’m gonna wring this nerd’s [Ed’s] neck.” *laughs* SAME!
*Jim pulls out one of the books* ...Did he stop it?
*Jim steps down without being blown up* YEAH! There we go!
“You OK?” “You left the army for this city?” *giggles*
“It grows on you.” *still giggling*
What is this?
“Everybody, raise your glasses to the killer of Jeremiah Valeska.” *shaking head while smiling* No... mmm no...
“Bring his head! Bring his head!” Ohhh...
Also, where the heck is Jeremiah?
*chuckles at Ed being described as a “tall, skinny man”*
...That’s not much of a description to go on.
*very confused at a group of people rallying together to kill Ed*
I miss Mr. Penn
“Edward Nygma is the monster respon-” *gasps*
“-responsible for killing the innocents of Haven.” *covers mouth with hands*
“...Ed, what have you done?” *leans back in seat* Ohhh my God. Oh Oswald, are you gonna break my heart this episode?
I can’t believe Ed is stuck within a redneck community.
So who sent Eduardo and his team? The government, right?
“Taking him down? That’d be a big win.” “Well, that’s why we’re here.” Oh my God, are they gonna take down Scarecrow?
*Ed tied to a lawn chair covered in electrical wire* What the....
Also, Ed, I want your boots. Also, why is a guy wearing anklet boots?
What??
What?? What am I watching?
What??
Are they gonna electrocute him? What??
*The redneck family electrocutes Ed* Well “Honey Boo Boo” looks terrible.
“Pay for JoJo!” JoJo?
*The mother shows Ed a sepia picture of JoJo* A dog? What?!? This about a dog?
AN: Also the actress who plays the mother here was in the Adam West Batman show.
“300 people died in Haven!” “Pfft, we don’t care about people.” *jaw drops open in shock*
WHA-WHA- WHAT AM I WATCHING??
“He... always had a smile on his face.” You’re talking about a dog.
“You anthropomorphizing nincompoop!” Wha- *starts giggling*
“Dogs can’t smile!” *leans back in seat to laugh*
[Ed’s] Gotta whip out that thesaurus!
*Ed starts remembering Oswald* Oh my God!
“I’m going to fix you, Ed!” *starts singing “Fix You” by Coldplay*
*gasps when Ed gets electrocuted with a full charge*
“I’m gong to fix you, Ed.” Please go find Oswald!
“Oh thank God the fuel line’s clogged.” *leans back to laugh and slaps table in hilarity*
*The mother makes her sons “fix” the fuel line* Oh my God, is that gonna send the charge back? Oh my God, he’s gonna burn these suckas alive.
*gasps when the car used to electrocute Ed bursts into flames*
Please tell me Ed’s gonna like take off on down the street with the chair still attached-
*Ed does exactly that* YES, LET’S GO!
*imitates the way Oswald says “feelers” sarcastically*
“I am surrounded by morons, Edward.” Aaawww...
Did he really just come in through the grate?
“But first, did you name your dog after me?” YES BITCH HE DID
Oswald’s like “I’m not answering that question.”
“Cobblepot’s on the top of my list from Walker.” Walker? Wait, Walker sent them? The secretary lady? Are we ever gonna meet her?
AN: Yes, in the next episode.
“Shock and awe’s my default.” *raises fist in small fist pump*
Poor Harvey’s the third wheel on this.
“You know what, take Harvey with you.” YEAHH!
“Man, you’re killing my buzz.” Is Selina drunk?
Yes, she is. How old are these kids?
“Let me [Selina] tell you [Bruce] something. That night, that your parents were murdered?” Nooo!
“I was in that alley, on that fire escape.” This is such a low blow.
*trying not to be sad over Selina bringing Bruce down*
“You... were the scared kid.” *sits back in seat* Oh my God... shut up, Selina!
I’m very disappointed right now.
“I love this song...” *shakes head in disapproval*
*Selina and Bruce start crying* Oh God, you’re making me... *fans near eyes*
Whoa, that was just the most sudden cut [back to Ed and Oswald]!
“How could you? You have made into some murderous puppet!” *shakes head* No, I don’t think Oswald’s behind that!
“For weeks, I've been waking up in strange places, not knowing how I got there or what I did. Driving myself mad, thinking I had gone mad. And now I know that it was all your doing!” No it wasn’t!
*claps hands toward screen* NooOOO... LISTEN!
“Of everything that you have put me through, this... this is the most cruel.” *puts hand on chest and shakes head* Oh my God...
Nooo...
“Ed, I [Oswald] don’t know what you’re talking about.” He didn’t have anything to do with it!
“You didn’t fix me! You broke me!” *puts hands in front of mouth in panic*
“You [Ed] had been stabbed, I [Oswald] paid Hugo Strange to save your life. I bet he did something to you when he was patching you up.” *flailing hands around* OK, ask about Lee! WHERE’S LEE?!?
“What was I supposed to do? Let you die?” *crosses hands over chest and leans back in chair*
“After Butch, you were my only friend.” *voice squeaky* Oh my God!
*Holds up finger toward screen* You [Oswald] are not gonna make me cry!
Whyyy do I recognize this music?
AN: It’s the track called “Penguin in Love” from S3
He [Oswald] walked into the gun [that Ed was pointing at him]!
Can you two just please have a drink and just make up please? Thank you.
“I [Ed] might have killed you, Oswald. And if that day comes, I swear to you I will stare you in the eye as I stab you in the heart.” *slowly nods* Glad to know we’re back on schedule.
*slams fist down on table like a gavel*
“If Hugo Strange did something to you [Ed], it means you are not responsible for Haven.” So what did Hugo Strange do?
*gasps when the roof shudders over Oswald and Ed*
*Ed disappears* Of course Ed runs! Jesus... Christ!
“Idiot!” *giggles* His little hop [when Oswald slapped one of his men on the shoulder in anger]!
Whoaaaa that’s a cool shot [of one of Eduardo’s men throwing a smoke bomb in the foyer]
Ohhhhhhhh that shot’s cool [of Oswald in the smoke]!
“Why hello, Harvey!” *in same tone of voice* Hiiiii!!!
“I hope you’re better prepared.” Uh, he [Harvey] has the military with him.
“Or, if you [Harvey] and your friends aren’t out by the time I count to three, I will mow you all DOWN!” Robin Lord Taylor is just killing it in this episode. Oh my gosh...
Also, Cory Michael Smith with that [confrontation with Oswald]. That scene was so good!
“I don’t have to call anyone. Go ahead. Count.” Ohhh, let’s go, Harvey! Let’s go!
*gasps when Oswald’s men got shot down via sniper on the staircase*
“Where’s Ed Nygma?” He doesn’t have him!
*gasps when Ed is taken to Barbara’s office*
*points at screen* How? How?
“There’s more going on here.” There’s always more going on in Gotham.
“I’m saying that Strange, or somebody, can control me. They killed those people.” Why would Hugo Strange go after Haven then?
“Information is your lifeblood. You help me [Ed], and I will give you the best intel you’ve ever had.” Listen to him, please. Barbara, listen to him.
“I don’t know where Strange is.” Where the heck is Strange then?!?
“But I can tell you where you’ll find his Igors.” Wait, he has his own gang called “Igors?” Oh my God...
*gasps* Are they torturing Oswald?
“You know, they say you can judge a man by his friends.” “This from a man [Oswald] who has no friends.” Wha- excuse me! You [Jim] are his friend.
“Nygma’s a patsy.” *cracks up*
“Jim, you want information. I want to go home.” Same.
“Things are changing in Gotham.” We know.
*Eduardo opens the door to the empty interrogation room* Oh my God, did he let him go?
He let him go. Jiiimm...
*jaw drops open in confusion when Strange sends a cadaver down a chute*
*chuckles when Ed jumps out of a body bag to surprise Strange*
“Oh my.” *laughs* Yes, BD Wong, come through! Yes!
I’m actually really glad we see Hugo Strange again
This lighting in this location is fabulous
“But I [Strange] will confess that when I was sewing up your [Ed’s] knife wound, I may tinkered a little with your grey matter.” The frick?!?
“I put a chip in your brain.” :O
“It allows you to be able to be controlled remotely.” *shoves away table with screen on it* What the [expletive]?!?
“But I don’t control you. I gave control to others.” Who’s controlling Ed?
“I [Strange] will write it down. That way, if I’m ever confronted, I can honestly say that I never told you [Ed].” That’s actually a pretty good way to go around it.
*Strange knocks out Ed* :O
“Not to worry. You’re experiencing a simple neural cut out.” What?
“I suppose we’re just going to have to open you [Ed] up and take a look under the hood.” *gasps* OH my GOD!
Holy shit!
“Are you [Bruce] sure you’re all right?” No he’s not!
“What if we don’t make it out of this?” *crosses hands over chest and leans back*
“Because the little things matter. Act by act, deed by deed, it means something. Even if no one cares.” Oh my God, Harveyyyyy!!
We’re adding him to the Bat-Dads. Yes! He’s the Bat-Uncle!
*laughs when Bruce pulls a Batman on Harvey*
*gasps when Strange turns off one of his tools*
“I apologize for the discomfort.” You better not!
*leans back and yells in disgust when the camera shows part of Ed’s exposed brain* Did we really need to see the brain?!?
What the frick happened?!?
*gasps when Oswald is shown carrying his dog* Oh my God!
That’s it. That’s the best part of this episode.
Secret door...
What is- what is this place?!?
That a manhole?
*makes aawing noises at Edward in Oswald’s arms*
He’s getting him out of harm’s way!
“Edward, I believe the time has come for a change in scenery.” *still cooing over the dog* Yeah...
Is he [Strange] stapling his [Ed’s] head [closed]?
*gasps when Jim holds Strange at gunpoint* Shiit...
Wait, so if Ed’s like the Winter Soldier for Gotham, who’s Hydra?
“I [Strange] am a scientist. A contract came along; I developed a tool.” Why??
*gasps in shock when Eduardo activates Ed’s chip*
:O
“Ta ta.” *flips off screen in shock*
“I [Eduardo] couldn’t say anything until we had the suspect in custody, but Walker wants Ed Nygma taken out now.” *soft gasp*
“Walker was behind this?” Wha-
“You know I hate this spook crap.” *chuckles*
Why would the government blow up Haven?
“Walker wants you [Jim] to put a bullet in his [Ed’s] brain.” *shakes hands at screen* No no nonononononono!
“Call it proof of loyalty.” Why?!?
“IT’s what she needs from you before she can move forward with final relief plans.” What are they gonna do to Gotham?
“Look at him [Ed]. He’s a loon. A cop killer.” *shakes head*
Why would they destroy Haven?
“Jim, ours is not to reason why.” He’s [Eduardo] just a lieutenant. He doesn’t know anything.
*gasps and slaps hands on desk* It’s like Russo in “The Punisher,” because he only took orders from Agent Orange and Orange didn’t tell him everything! He’s a dog on a leash!
“What’s your answer?” He’s [Eduardo] not gonna shoot Jim.
*leans back when Jim sets down his gun* God... oh my God...
*gasps when Jim pulls a surprise attack on Eduardo*
Wait, how is Ed just frozen there?
“You [Ed] know Jim Gordon. You know this city. Find him and kill him.” What?!?
*Ed yeets down the chute after Jim* OK, that kinda took me out of the moment but what the hell am I watching?
God, that city looks terrible.
*gasps and reels back* It’s Jeremiah! Yes!
He’s just sleepin’, this scary, beautiful man.
What are they doing?
What?!?
“Ouch.” *eyebrows raise*
“Stitches still sore, huh? Never would have happened if you [Jeremiah] wore that armor I [Ecco] prepared.” *scoffs* Of cou-
“That bullet is making you [Ecco] sentimental.” Glass houses?
“Give her a shake, huh?” *jaw drops out of mixture of shock, confusion, and being grossed out when Ecco shakes her head for him*
“I told you I had to let Selina thrust the knife into my flesh at least once.” *tries not to be disgusted”
“Verisimilitude trumps precaution, you see.” *ends up smiling*
AN: What a great line.
“Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne needed to think you were dead, boss.” “Yeah.” Thank you, Captain Obvious-
*gasps when Jeremiah suddenly makes Ecco lean down toward him*
Where are they? Is this still that tunnel from the Soothsayer’s lair?
*jaw drops in shock when Jeremiah and Ecco walk into the sitting room of Wayne Manor*
*slaps hands on table and leans back* SHHHUT THE FRICK UP!
Shit, this is the music from the first trailer!
*gasps and jaw drops open in absolute horror when the surgery patients are shown to Jeremiah for the first time*
*Jeremiah laughs* [very softly] My God...
“gasps when the camera gets in Jeremiah’s face*
“I love family reunions, don’t you?” *just shaking out of shock*
*shoves away laptop and table at the final shot of Jeremiah* Ahh my God!
*End title pops up* Wait-wh-wh-wait what? What?
*gets out of seat to take it all in when end credits roll*
*comes back after a good five seconds* What the freak did I just watch?
*sits for a while to try to catch my breath* Whoo...
We got to wait two weeks for another episode? Get the frick outta here. Oh my God...
